Then came to Jesus scribes and Pharisees, which were of Jerusalem, saying,
Why do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they wash not their hands when they eat bread.
But he answered and said unto them,
(Mt. 15:1-3,9) Why do ye also transgress the commandment of God by your tradition? But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.
Contemporary Christianity can be compared to the scribes and Pharisees of Jesus’ time. Rather than discriminating between the teaching of Jesus and the apostles, they are complacent in holding fast to the beliefs and practices that the church has handed down to them throughout the centuries, regardless of whether or not they were held by Jesus and the early believers.
Even in the early years of Christianity, after the death of the Lord Jesus Christ, controversy arose over many issues.
Whenever a Biblical precept is unpalatable to the masses of believers it is given up to change in an effort to abort the unpleasantness of its adherents.
Such is the case regarding Jesus’s teaching about the future Kingdom of God, with its intent to bring about a new world government.
